Wasted Domains

Introduction

Wasted Domains is an ambitious Online Multiplayer Role Playing Game project inspired by (but not based-on nor derived-from) Interplay's Fallout series, and the earlier game Wasteland. The basic idea of these games is that the player is playing a character within a post-apocalyptic world of the future, after a major world war (although the exact cause goes unexplained, which just adds to the mystique). Wasted Domains takes this idea and expands it. Wasted Domains takes place in a unique world (not directly based on the Fallout world), in which civilization fell for some unspecified reason (the causes of the fall are integrated into the plot, and can be discovered by players as the plot evolves). Many generations later, human civilization and culture is is rebuilding itself on the ashes, fallen walls and twisted, rusting metal of the past. The player takes the role of a pawn in the power struggle between several major power bases. As the plot unfolds, players may rise in the ranks of the various 'factions' and participate more directly in the movements, ultimately guiding the plot through their actions. The GMs take an active role in the plot of the world, setting up major plot arcs that players play out, and influencing the personal stories of individual players.

Ultimately, it is planned that the whole world would be encompassed by the game world, although short term goals dictate orders of magnitude smaller test worlds. The design of the system is such that the game world is a continuous, single-scale world, akin to Ultima Online, as opposed to a segmented 'arena' world that exists in Fallout. The first test world will be a small demo area consisting of a small patch of desert with various junk and monsters, in order to test the game engine and square away data formats. The next test world will be a fully realized city, which will be the 'seed' from which the full world will be 'grown'. This city will be a desert trading post, and intersection of several kingdoms with representatives of all the factions engaged in inter-faction intrigue. It should be noted that while these two tests are in desert climates, the full world will have a variety of climates, including ice-age tundra, jungle, forest and radioactive wasteland. We would like to target desert climates first because they are close to the environments of Fallout.

Development Status

As of December, 2004

We have a modeller, a music guy, a coder, a world designer and a producer. We need more modellers, coders, artists, and world designers as all projects of this type do, but we'll get by. While each of the team has a specific role, at this stage we are all involved in every part of development, coordinating through IRC.

It is most likely that we will use Irrlicht for our engine because of its simplicity. There are some detailed plans as to how the client will work and how resources will be managed.

Our lead modeller, Pila, is working on the demo area. He has made several excellent models, and is learning fast. We are currenly using Blender to create models, but blender or wings3d should be fine, if anyone wants to contribute a model. We will probably use MD2 models in-game. Some of the art that we have ready can be seen on the Art Page. Work continues on beauty-graphics, models and plans for general artwork. Books have been given, work has been done. We should be on top of the art situation currently.

We have concrete plans for the Demo Area, including a basic story-line. We have also fleshed out the major Power Bases, and have background stories and profiles worked up about them, which will be integrated into the public knowledge base soon.

Our music director, Brian is on hiatus. We don't need music yet though. Although we have ambitious plans for it. He likes our current plan, we just need something for him to work with.
